Syphilis… A Silent Threat You Shouldn’t Ignore: Discover the Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections at San Paulo Hua Hin Hospital

Among sexually transmitted infections (STIs), syphilis is considered a dangerous “silent threat.” In its early stages, the symptoms are often mild and may disappear on their own, leading many infected individuals to overlook the condition. As a result, the disease can progress into later chronic stages, potentially causing permanent damage to the nervous system, heart, and other vital organs.

San Paulo Hua Hin Hospital, with a commitment to caring for the health of people in Hua Hin and nearby communities, would like to emphasize the importance of awareness, screening, and timely and confidential treatment of this disease. Syphilis is caused by infection with the bacterium Treponema pallidum.

The symptoms are divided into 3 main stages, which present different signs

Primary Syphilis

The main symptom is a chancre, a small sore with raised edges that is usually painless. The sore often appears on the genitals or around the anus. This sore can heal on its own within 3–6 weeks, even without treatment, but the bacteria remain in the body.

Secondary Syphilis

This stage occurs 2–10 weeks after the first stage and is when the bacteria spread throughout the body. The most noticeable symptom is a rash on the body, especially on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, which is usually not itchy. There may also be fever, swollen lymph nodes, or patchy hair loss. These symptoms may disappear on their own again, causing patients to mistakenly believe they are completely cured.

Latent and Tertiary Syphilis

During the latent stage, patients will have no symptoms, but the bacteria remain and quietly damage internal organs. When it progresses to the tertiary stage, the bacteria severely damage vital organs, causing neurological disease (Neurosyphilis), cardiovascular disease, or permanent brain damage.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment for syphilis is highly effective if diagnosed in the early stage. Doctors will take a detailed medical history and perform blood tests to detect antibodies to the infection.

The standard treatment is Penicillin G, an injectable medication that is highly effective in eliminating the bacteria.

  - In the primary and secondary stages, a single treatment can completely cure the infection.

  - In the latent and tertiary stages, higher doses and a longer treatment period may be required.

Prevention

The best prevention is safe and responsible sexual activity, including the consistent use of condoms, and importantly, regular screening for sexually transmitted infections if there is a change of sexual partner or risk.

Early detection and treatment of syphilis is the wisest decision to protect your health and future. If you are at risk or have concerns, please do not hesitate to come for screening. Taking care of your sexual health is the best form of self-love.
