In Thai traditional medicine, postpartum maternal care, known as Yu Fai, focuses on restoring the body's equilibrium after childbirth. It acknowledges that the four elements (earth, water, wind, and fire) in the body, particularly the fire element, become out of equilibrium during this time, causing discomfort, body pain, exhaustion, and possible breast engorgement.
Yu Fai seeks to restore the mother's health by warming the body, reducing muscle pain, encouraging the flow of amniotic fluid, and reducing breast tenderness. Specific areas or significant muscle groups, such as the abdomen, chest, and back, are treated with heat. According to Thai traditional medicine, it is commonly applied around the abdomen, which is the origin of the Prasat Ten lines, a series of energy lines extending along the body.
The duration of postpartum care for mothers varies depending on the mode of delivery.
Natural childbirth: If the mother is not experiencing extreme exhaustion and if the vaginal wound has completely healed and dried, this care can generally commence 7 to 10 days after the birth, assuming the vaginal wound has completely healed and dried.
Cesarean section: 30-45 days after the procedure, or once the surgical incision has completely healed and dried, postpartum care can be initiated for mothers who have undergone a cesarean section.
After childbirth, it is recommended to receive postpartum care for no more than three months. Typically, the treatment is administered for five to ten consecutive days to obtain optimal results.
It is essential to note that postpartum maternal care should be administered by trained professionals who are familiar with the necessary techniques and precautions. This traditional method of care seeks to promote the mother's health and restore her body's equilibrium after childbirth.
