5 Common Diseases Women Should Be Aware Of

Minor symptoms such as unusually painful periods, missed periods, or abnormal vaginal discharge are often overlooked. However, they may be warning signs of an underlying condition. Understanding common women’s health concerns is therefore important, as early detection and timely treatment can improve the chances of recovery.

1. Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. It develops when cells in the breast, particularly those in the milk ducts, begin to divide abnormally.

The cancer cells may invade nearby tissues and, if left untreated, spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system.

Detecting breast cancer at an early stage can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Regular screening helps identify abnormalities before the disease progresses.

Symptoms

๐ A hard lump in the breast or underarm

๐ Swelling or redness of the breast

๐ Skin with an orange-peel appearance

๐ An inverted nipple

๐ Unusual fluid or discharge from the nipple

๐ Changes in the shape or size of the breast

Prevention and Risk Reduction

Women should examine their breasts regularly and receive mammograms according to their doctor’s recommendations.

Risk-reduction measures include:

๐ Avoiding smoking

๐ Limiting alcohol consumption

๐ Exercising regularly

๐ Maintaining a healthy body weight

Treatment

Treatment often begins with surgery to remove the tumour or, in some cases, the entire breast, depending on the stage and extent of the disease.

Additional treatments may include:

๐ Radiotherapy

๐ Chemotherapy

๐ Hormone therapy

๐ Other medicines intended to control cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence

When breast cancer is detected early, the likelihood of successful treatment is considerably higher.

2. Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

It may be found around the:

๐ Ovaries, where it may form an endometrioma or chocolate cyst

๐ Intestines

๐ Pelvic wall

๐ Other structures within the pelvic cavity

This abnormal tissue can cause inflammation, chronic pain, and fertility problems.

Symptoms

๐ Severe menstrual pain

๐ Recurrent or chronic lower abdominal pain

๐ Pain during sexual intercourse

๐ Difficulty becoming pregnant

Prevention and Early Detection

There is currently no definite way to prevent endometriosis. However, annual health examinations and paying attention to unusual symptoms can help detect the condition earlier.

Severe period pain that interferes with daily life should not be dismissed as normal.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms, the location of the abnormal tissue, and whether the patient wishes to become pregnant.

Early treatment may include:

๐ Pain-relieving medication

๐ Hormonal treatment to reduce the activity of the abnormal tissue

If symptoms do not improve or infertility is present, surgery may be required to remove the endometriosis.

In very severe cases, removal of an ovary or the uterus may be considered, depending on the individual condition and treatment plan.

3. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, is a hormonal condition frequently found among women of reproductive age.

It is associated with disrupted ovulation and may involve multiple small follicles in the ovaries. This can cause irregular periods and difficulty becoming pregnant.

Symptoms

๐ Irregular or absent periods

๐ Severe acne

๐ Excess facial or body hair

๐ Easy weight gain

๐ Insulin resistance

๐ Difficulty becoming pregnant

Prevention and Risk Reduction

Although PCOS cannot always be prevented, healthy lifestyle habits can help reduce its effects.

Recommended measures include:

๐ Maintaining an appropriate body weight

๐ Choosing foods with a low glycaemic index

๐ Exercising regularly

๐ Managing stress

Treatment

Treatment usually begins with lifestyle changes, particularly weight management and regular exercise.

If symptoms do not improve, the doctor may prescribe:

๐ Oral contraceptive pills to regulate hormones and menstrual cycles

๐ Ovulation-stimulating medication for women who wish to become pregnant

๐ Blood sugar-lowering medicine such as metformin for patients with insulin resistance

The treatment plan depends on the patient’s symptoms and reproductive goals.

4. Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer develops when cells in the cervix undergo abnormal changes, most commonly because of persistent infection with high-risk types of Human Papillomavirus, or HPV.

These cellular changes usually develop slowly and may be detected before they progress to cancer if regular screening is performed.

Symptoms

๐ Abnormal bleeding between periods

๐ Bleeding after sexual intercourse

๐ Vaginal discharge with an unusual colour or strong odour

๐ Pain during sexual intercourse

๐ Chronic lower abdominal or pelvic pain

Prevention

Effective preventive measures include:

๐ Receiving the HPV vaccine at an appropriate age

๐ Undergoing regular cervical cancer screening

๐ Receiving a Pap smear according to medical recommendations

๐ Receiving an HPV DNA test when appropriate

Treatment

Early abnormal cervical cells may be treated with procedures that remove or destroy the affected tissue.

If the disease has progressed, treatment may include:

๐ Surgery

๐ Radiotherapy

๐ Chemotherapy

The selected treatment depends on the stage of the disease and whether the cancer has spread.

5. Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop from the muscular tissue of the uterus.

They may range from very small to extremely large and are commonly found in women between 30 and 50 years of age.

Many women have no symptoms. However, fibroids may sometimes affect menstruation, nearby organs, or pregnancy.

Symptoms

๐ Abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding

๐ Chronic lower abdominal pain

๐ Frequent urination

๐ Constipation

๐ Difficulty becoming pregnant in some cases

Prevention and Early Detection

There is no direct method for preventing uterine fibroids.

Regular examinations and ultrasound screening when recommended can help detect fibroids and monitor changes in their size.

Treatment

If the fibroids are small and do not affect daily life, the doctor may recommend regular monitoring without immediate treatment.

When symptoms are more severe, treatment may include:

๐ Medication or hormonal treatment to control symptoms or reduce the size of the fibroids

๐ Surgery to remove the fibroids

The most appropriate treatment depends on the size and location of the fibroids, the severity of the symptoms, the patient’s age, and future pregnancy plans.

The Importance of Regular Women’s Health Examinations

Women’s health conditions may begin with symptoms that appear minor or harmless. However, ignoring them may allow the disease to progress and affect quality of life or future fertility.

Important ways to protect women’s health include:

๐ Observing changes in the body

๐ Not ignoring unusual menstrual or reproductive symptoms

๐ Avoiding preventable risk factors

๐ Receiving regular annual health examinations

๐ Seeking medical advice when symptoms persist or interfere with daily life

Early detection and appropriate treatment are essential for maintaining long-term health because prevention and timely care are always better than allowing a condition to become more difficult to treat.
